Diamond stones have key advantages over other types of sharpening stones. Diamond stones are the fastest cutting sharpening stones. Speed is especially helpful when working with coarse grits where you may spend additional time on a dull edge.

Do you need to lubricate a diamond sharpening stone?

The most common mistake people make when using diamond sharpening stones is not using enough lubricant. Keeping a good puddle of water on the stone prevents the metal shavings from clogging the stone which slows down the sharpening process.

Water is preferred because it is neater to work with and because oil doesn’t present an advantage. If you do decide to use oil on your diamond stones use only a non-hardening oil like mineral oil. Any oil that hardens, as most vegetable oils do, should not be used on any stone, diamond or otherwise.
