Man-made benchstones are primarily available in two different types of abrasive: aluminum oxide (India stones) and silicon carbide (Crystolon stones).
Is it better to use oil or water on Norton sharpening stones?
To keep your stone from clogging up with small metal fragments, which makes the sharpening properties of the abrasive grains much less effective, you can use either Norton Honing oil or water on a benchstone prior to sharpening.
Can you use olive oil or BabyOil on a sharpening stone?
Plant-based edible oils. Olive, peanut, rapeseed oil, Baby Oil etc. Bear in mind that such liquids are highly viscous and can lead to clogging of the sharpening stone surface.
